“I did what any reasonable adult woman would do when confronted with her college rival turned next-door neighbour. I dove behind the nearest bookshelf.“January Andrews (beach read)
Hi guys! With the lockdown going on in full swing, I decided to pick up this debut book by Emily Henry for a little pick-me-up and I am glad that I did! Read on to know my thoughts on this book.
While in real life, my perfect little beach trip to Bali was cancelled (thanks, Corona!), I found my happily-ever-after (or happy-right-now) with this book.
From the very beginning, the characters of January and Gus Everett will captivate you. This is not your typical girl-meets-boy-fireworks-leading-to-happily-ever-after rom-com. This is smart and funny and gripping right until the very end.
January Andrews and Augustus Everett, both are published writers, spending the summer in neighbouring beach homes. While January, with unanswered questions moves to her late father’s beach house in order to finish her long due romance novel, she finds it hard to write about true-never-faltering-love when she no longer believes if it really exists. Gus, on the other hand, is into more serious-practical kind of literary fiction. In order to overcome their creative rut, Gus and January decide to switch genres for a bet and challenge each other to see who can complete and sell the book first. To do this, both of them decide to help each other in relevant research that involves late night interviews lead by Gus and romantic adventures planned by January.
Honestly, I felt all heart-eyes, head-over-heels love struck with both of them! I loved how their friendship evolves; snarky-batter turns to deep conversations to tongue-in-cheek flirting. I loved how these two could have open and honest conversations while still roasting each other and how they challenged and motivated each other in the best ways. The cute note scribbling through the windows (imagine Taylor Swift’s You belong with me video) or quoting famous lines from romance novels (if you’re a bird; I am a bird) will have you smiling throughout the book.
Falling’s the part that takes your breath away. It’s the part when you can’t believe the person standing in front of you both exists and happened to wander into your path. It’s supposed to make you feel lucky to be alive, exactly when and where you are.”-EMILY HENRY
Packed with a witty plot, Beach Read is funny, swoon-y and full of awe-worthy moments. The chemistry between the grumpy hero and wine drinking-from-a-purse heroine will make you root for them from the very beginning. Both of them are smart, realistic and relatable. Witty exchanges, endless roasting and sarcastic tease-fest along with palpable tension between the two perfectly counterbalances the hurt and fear in their apprehensive hearts.
Emily Henry will have you charmed with her engaging and clever wordplay. Henry truly masters unravelling of both characters, really getting down to the crux of who January and Augustus are, and more importantly, why. Once you start reading this, trust me, you will be GLUED (I even took my copy to the bathroom, I swear). I can’t remember the last time I was this excited by a book!
To believe in love, you don’t need a happily ever after. You can be in love with the perfect happy-right-now-right-here moments!
